Devlog 5 - Game Ideas

Devlog 5

Before developing games you must come up with a few ideas, focussing on a few core mechanics.

In the case of my University unit, we need to develop a game prototype under a specific theme: Change. In turn, I have come up with a few ideas for games that could revolve around the idea of change:

Game Idea One:

A game where you play as a single chess piece. At the beginning of each turn, you can change your chess piece to any of the other chess pieces and use that chess piece's moves for that turn. To limit the player they could only change to certain pieces a limited number of times (I.e. queen piece only 3 times.)
The Target audience would be people who enjoy puzzle games, people who enjoyed and were good at chess may find this to be a fun and interesting take on the classic game of chess.
When developing the prototype, the main focus would be making sure the gameplay works smoothly and work similar to chess (in aspects that would be similar.)

Game Idea Two:

A game where the player can change the environment around them in ways to help them either progress in levels or fight enemies. For example, the player could grow a withered plant that can attack nearby enemies or the player can wither a bunch of vines to let themselves pass. The player cannot directly attack things themselves and must rely on the things in the environment to help them.

People who enjoy puzzles in games may find some fun in working out how best to use the environment to work to their advantage.

This focus of the prototype would be making sure the gameplay, making sure that growth and withering of plants and changing of their abilities is a fun mechanic.

Game Idea Three:

A FPS where the player's weapons are changed every 30 seconds, the player doesn't have any control over what weapons they have and must adapt with each change to fight enemies. The weapons will have very different use cases, some would be long ranged some would be up close, incentivising varying your playstyle.

People who enjoy first-person shooters with arcade/sandbox style gameplay such as DOOM, Halo, Ultrakill would enjoy this game.

The focus of this game would be making sure the weapons are fun to use and relatively balanced to make it so the player doesn't feel disappointed by a weapon change. With some focus also directed at enemy AI.
